The Mejlis Communications Committee told Arzuw NEWS that the delegation Turkmenistan participates in 206th meeting of the Governing Council of the International Parliamentary Union (IPU). More than 400 deputies from 140 countries participate in the four-day session, which began on November 1. This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event is taking place online.
On the first day of the meeting, a virtual election for a new IPU president was held, which was an example of digital democracy. According to the results of the voting with the result of 56% votes (222 votes) won by Duarte Pacheco of Portugal.
Other issues of the session include: approval of the report of the 205th Steering Committee meeting, adoption of the budget and approval of the IPU 2021 work program, election of two members of the Executive Committee, and others.
