While on a working trip to the capital, the head of Turkmenistan visited the Ashgabat-Turkmenebat highway under construction. Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov inspected the work in progress.
The main task of the six hundred kilometers of high-speed highway is to increase the capacity of the road network of the state. It will also have an impact on the increase of cargo transit volumes. The Ashgabat-Turkmenebat highway will connect with the Ashgabat-Turkmenbashi road. This will provide access to a seaport on the Caspian Sea coast, which, in turn, will enable cargo transit by sea to the Caucasus and European countries, to the southern part of the Russian Federation, to the northern part of the Islamic Republic of Iran, as well as to the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf.
Turkmen Autobahn JSC, part of SPPT, is responsible for the implementation of the project. The company is contracted by a number of local construction companies.
The first segment, stretching from the Turkmen capital to Tejen, is scheduled to be commissioned this year. The second stage of construction of the segment from Tejen to Mary is planned to be completed by the end of 2022. The third section, from Mary to Turkmenabat, is expected to be commissioned a year later.
The width of the route is 34.5 m. There is one additional lane on each side. The highway begins at the 24th km of the Ashgabat-Dashoguz highway. There are traffic control services and payment terminals on this section.
Maintenance of the road will be entrusted to special stations. The highway will also be equipped with an automatic video surveillance system. Along the road there will be placed gas stations, shopping areas and places for recreation. It is planned to equip the bridges and crossings. It will be possible to pay the toll electronically in any convenient form of currency.
The heads of the SPPT and a number of specialized structures present during the inspection reported to the Turkmen leader on the work that had already been carried out and on those planned to be carried out in the near future. The President listened to the report and gave the order for further activities. The Turkmen leader stressed the need to assimilate and apply the relevant international best practices. In this regard, it is important to cooperate with such international organizations as the International Road Transport Union, the Program of Cooperation with the European Union TRASEKA and others.
