Turkmenistan organized a side event on the margins of the 32nd Session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, which took place on 30 June in the Portuguese city of Porto. The theme of the event was "International Year of Peace and Confidence: Strengthening Multilateralism for a Secure and Sustainable Future".
The initiative is timed to coincide with the International Year of Peace and Confidence declared at the suggestion of Turkmenistan, as well as the 30th anniversary of the republic's permanent neutrality.
The President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, Pia Kaouma, the Special Representative for Central Asia, Farah Karimi, and representatives of the parliaments of the Organization's participating States made welcoming statements at the event.
The participants of the meeting emphasized the importance of neutrality as an effective mechanism for promoting international peace, stability and dialogue. Special attention was paid to the importance of strengthening multilateral cooperation, collective responsibility and mutual respect among States.
Representatives of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly noted interest in Turkmenistan's experience in implementing a neutral foreign policy to promote trust and culture in the international arena.
Participants stressed the importance of the International Year of Peace and Confidence as a platform for strengthening parliamentary diplomacy and deepening partnership within the OSCE and other international organizations.
