A joint project of UNDP and the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection, funded by the Global Environment Facility, is implementing the 2nd Waste Management Campaign. The key project partner in the first and second campaigns was the Environmental Protection Society of Turkmenistan. From late 2019 to the first half of 2020, the 1st plastic waste management campaign was carried out. The implementation of the first phase consisted of the installation of fifty-five containers for sorting plastic on the territory of Ashgabat and the surrounding area, awareness work in schools, distribution of planting material.
J. Durdykova, UNDP specialist, stated a significant level of involvement of citizens of Turkmenistan in the implementation of the project. Owners of grocery stores and beauty salons, management of parks were interested in cooperation with the project. The public showed interest in the implementation of the campaign, the location of containers and the work of sorting points for recycling.
The second phase involves raising awareness among Turkmenistanis about glass and paper recycling. The nationwide campaign was launched in July 2020 under the slogan "Zero Waste". The campaign slogan encourages people to reduce the amount of waste disposed of in landfills and increase recycling.
So far, Turkmenistan's private sector has collected and prepared 30 tons of plastic waste for recycling.
