New Head for Europe and Central Asia presented by the World Bank

Anna Bjerde assumed the position of WB vice president for the European region and Central Asia on May 1. She will be in charge of strategic, analytical, and operational work, according to the financial institution's press service.

Ms. Bjerde said she would work closely with authorities in the region to minimize the impact of the pandemic on the economy and the health of citizens. According to her, an expedited allocation mechanism will be developed soon, and tools that protect people's interests will be put in place.

According to the WB, more than $1.4 billion was allocated as support to European countries and CA. About $490 million was approved for emergency response projects since April 2. Another approximately $925 million is reallocated and used to combat COVID-19 under the adopted financial arrangements. These funds are being used to purchase protective equipment, ventilators, and other medical equipment, as well as to train medical professionals and assist vulnerable populations.

Anne Bjerde has 25 years of experience at the WB, having held a number of key positions. She is a recognized expert in economic development issues. Since July 2015, the post has been held by Cyril Muller.
