Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Vepa Hajiyev and EU Ambassador Diego Ruiz Alonso held talks during which they reviewed the nuances of the current situation and prospects of Turkmen-European cooperation. The key topic was the process of improving the Energy Charter Treaty. Turkmenistan is a party to the Treaty, and is taking an active part in the process of improving the document together with its partner states. The initiative to improve the Treaty was directly documented during the Ashgabat Energy Charter Conference in autumn 2017.
The main points of improvement of the Treaty cover investment and finance, sustainable development, and the legal framework. The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan and the EU Ambassador mutually expressed interest in synchronizing the Treaty with the objectives set by the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.
