In the process of cataloguing metal items in the museum collection of the Institute of History and Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, a rare artifact was discovered. The amulet-tumar was found on the territory of Shorja settlement, near Dehistan plain. It belongs to XI-XII centuries.
This find was of great interest to specialists. The artifact is well preserved. It is a fairly large-scale figure resembling an isosceles triangle. The base is twenty and a half centimeters. Inside there is a smaller triangle, the sides of which are ten centimeters. Tumar is decorated with patterns, inscriptions.
In the decoration of the tumar of metal craftsmen used their favorite patterns - vegetation. The tumar has inscriptions in Arabic script. The handwriting of the "flowering Kufu" with typical decoration of letters with floral elements, and the handwriting of the "naskh", which is progressively transformed into a kind of ornamentation, are used.
The inscriptions contain good wishes, which were deciphered by the scholar and ethnographer G. Yagshimuradov. He established that, in addition to glorifying Allah, the inscriptions promise health, success, wealth, generosity, prosperity and abundance to the family of the amulet holder.
The triangle figurine interested scientists not so much because of its decoration, but because of what folk beliefs were reflected in it. The amulet-tumar became popular in everyday life because, according to superstitions, it was endowed with the ability to protect from illnesses, evil eye and evil speaking.
These triangular-shaped figures were sewn on children's headdresses, clothing, hung in the house, especially above the entrance to the house.
