Turkmenistan held a large-scale greening campaign to mark the 30th anniversary of independence. It is also symbolic that the event, initiated by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, was held on the eve of the main spring holiday, Novruz Bayram.
In addition to the leader of the nation, heads and delegates of the Turkmen Parliament and Government, heads of ministries and departments, as well as ordinary citizens also planted their trees.
The year 2021, which the UN General Assembly has declared the International Year of Peace and Trust through a resolution, is being held in Turkmenistan under the slogan "Turkmenistan is a Home of Peace and Trust". A whole range of cultural and humanitarian, as well as political and economic events are planned for this symbolic year. The holding of thematic meetings, Olympiads, forums and exhibitions is planned. The events will be held not only in Turkmenistan but also abroad, and their format will be both virtual and face to face.
The current greening campaign is fully consistent with Turkmenistan's National Strategy for Confronting Climate Change. Its main goal is to increase the area allocated for forest areas in the country. The event also corresponds with the objectives of Turkmenistan's eco-diplomacy. The greening campaign is another step toward the implementation of Goal 15 of the Sustainable Development Goals, aimed at combating desertification and preserving biodiversity.
