Turkmenistan intensifies interaction with UNIDO

Turkmenistan intends to interact more actively with UNIDO. The drafts of a number of agreements that the Turkmen government intends to conclude with this UN Industrial Development Organization were presented to President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov during a regular government meeting.

Rashid Meredov, Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, delivered a report to the Head of the State. He informed about the expansion of cooperation with interstate formations dealing with environmental activities, climate change, reasonable water use and introduction of progressive technologies ensuring environmental security. Among other things, they spoke about the interaction and opportunities for partnership with the United Nations formations and projects in these areas. The head of the Foreign Ministry suggested establishing a permanent partnership with the UN Center for Climate Change Technologies. The Center was formed to achieve the goals of the Framework Convention on Climate Change. It began operating in 2013 under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

Taking into account the current national strategy stemming from the Paris Agreement, a document on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in Turkmenistan for the period up to 2030 has been prepared. The state plans to take a number of steps in this direction. It is also embodied in interaction with other countries and interstate formations. In this regard, opportunities to expand cooperation with UNIDO, the main area of activity of which is environmentally friendly economy and industry, are noted.

Thus, R. Meredov said that at the moment together with this formation a number of projects are being implemented that contribute to the implementation of Turkmenistan's obligations under the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Sphere and the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Sphere.

In addition, a new package of required documentation for some specialized projects has been prepared. It will be signed between the Ministry of Agriculture of Turkmenistan and UNIDO.

The presented projects were approved by the Turkmen leader, and the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was instructed to continue activities aimed at promoting eco-initiatives to protect the natural environment in cooperation with foreign organizations. The President also signed a resolution on the action plan to develop Turkmenistan's interstate cooperation in the field of hydrogen energy for the current and next years. It should be noted that not so long ago the Turkmen expert Allaberdy Ilyasov noted that Turkmenistan may well become one of the leading countries in hydrogen energy.
