Turkmenistan announces initiatives in sustainable transportation and food security at the UN

Turkmenistan seeks to contribute to global progress in sustainable transportation and food security through new initiatives, announced President Serdar Berdimuhamedov at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.

On sustainable transport, President Berdymukhamedov called for a high-level meeting to be convened at the UN on World Sustainable Transport Day, which was proposed by Turkmenistan in a resolution adopted last May.

He expressed Turkmenistan's readiness to cooperate with relevant UN bodies to organize this event during the current session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

With regard to food security, the Turkmen leader put forward a proposal to convene a major international forum on this issue under the auspices of the United Nations in cooperation with the World Food Program, WHO and UNICEF. Turkmenistan proposed to hold this forum in its capital Ashgabat.

There is a need for unity, principle and determination in addressing issues related to the access of states and regions to food resources, guarantees of adequate nutrition as an inalienable right of any human being," the President of Turkmenistan said.

He also added that breakthrough solutions are needed to overcome barriers to food security.
