Turkmenistan urges UN to pay more attention to environmental problems in Central Asia

Addressing the General Assembly on Tuesday. UNPresident of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov called on the United Nations and the international community to pay closer attention to pressing environmental problems in Central Asia.

He said it was time to overcome inertia in addressing the region's environmental problems and launch concrete actions to form a comprehensive UN environmental strategy for Central Asia.

In particular, President Berdimuhamedov proposed to establish a Regional Center for Climate Change Technologies in Central Asia under the auspices of the United Nations. This center, headquartered in Ashgabat, would be called upon to address systemic solutions to climate problems in the region.

In addition, the Turkmen leader proposed an initiative to establish the Caspian Environmental Initiative, which should become an international platform for cooperation in the field of environmental protection of the Caspian Sea, preservation of its biological resources and solving pollution problems.

He noted that this initiative should involve close interaction of the Caspian littoral states with the relevant UN structures.

In general, I believe that it is time to pay closer and more effective attention to environmental problems in Central Asia here at the UN, to overcome certain inertia in their consideration and to start targeted and concrete measures," the President said.

In his opinion, there is a need for a strategic approach to solving the region's environmental problems.
