An online training was held in Ashgabat to train specialists in mapping saline soils using modern GIS technologies. This training was initiated and conducted by the Global Environment Facility and the UN FAO.
Participants in the three-day training included specialists from government agencies as well as members of Turkmenistan's SPS. In total, more than forty people attended the training. The training was aimed at studying GIS-technologies, its participants were introduced to modern mapping methods using remote sensing and the possibility of obtaining operational results in real time. Application of such technologies of soil salinity assessment gives an opportunity to significantly reduce time and labor costs.
The participants also studied FAO approaches to mapping in different states, requirements for baseline information to generate maps of salt marshes. The event provided an opportunity to learn about the mapping process in detail and explore the factors that influence land salinity.
