IAEA conducted a mission on oncology in Turkmenistan

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) have completed an imPACT review mission to Turkmenistan aimed at strengthening cancer care in the country. The mission worked from September 8 to 13 in Ashgabat and Dashoguz province. International experts conducted a comprehensive assessment of all areas of cancer care, including cancer prevention, early detection, diagnosis, surgical treatment, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, nuclear medicine and palliative care.

During the visit, the specialists visited key medical institutions of the country. Among them are the Scientific-Clinical Center of Oncology, Dashoguz Oncology Center and Scientific-Clinical Center of Maternal and Child Health Protection.

The experts held meetings with representatives of government agencies, including the Ministry of Finance and Economy, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education and the State Statistical Office. Visits were also made to educational institutions - the Myrat Garryev State Medical University of Turkmenistan and the International Scientific Training Center.

The mission included consultations with UN agencies, civil society representatives and non-governmental organizations on health financing and cancer policy development.

At the final high-level meeting, international experts presented strategic recommendations for the development of a sustainable cancer care system in Turkmenistan.
