Five weightlifters represent Turkmenistan at the junior championship in Tashkent

Five athletes represent Turkmenistan at the world junior weightlifting championship held in the capital of Uzbekistan. Turkmenistan is represented at the junior championship by Bektimur Reyimov (67 kg), Maksat Meredov and Gaygysyz Torayev (both under 73 kg), Sherzad Rustambayev (89 kg) and Atadjan Dayiyev (over 109 kg). In total there will be 244 athletes from 53 countries participating in the championship. Competitions are a qualification for the Olympics in Tokyo.

Due to the fact that the global pandemic prevented the Junior Championships in 2020, the International Weightlifting Federation allowed athletes born in 2000 to participate. Thus, Maksat Meredov will also be able to compete for a ticket to the Olympic Games in Tokyo. In April 2021 M. Meredov got two silvers in the jerk (189 kg) and the total of the biathlon (336 kg). In order to qualify for the Olympics, the athlete will need to demonstrate the highest performance.

At the moment, the best chances of Turkmenistan to participate in the Olympics among weightlifters have Kristina Shermetova (55 kg), Redzhepbai Redzhepov (81 kg), Hojamuhammet Toichiev (over 109 kg).
