The President of Turkmenistan Approved the Concept of the National Program on the Aral Sea

The President of Turkmenistan signed a decree approving the Concept of the National Program on the Aral Sea for 2021-2025. According to the document, the Interdepartmental Commission was formed and its composition and regulations were approved.

The key objectives of the document are to improve the environmental, socio-economic condition of the territory adjacent to the Aral Sea, as well as the development of the National Program on the Aral Sea.

The task of the Interdepartmental Commission is precisely the preparation of the National Program on the Aral Sea for 2021-2025. The decree also approved a phased plan of activities in this direction.

Turkmenistan pays close attention to issues related to the Aral Sea region. Thus, representatives of the country became participants of the meetingThe meeting was held on April 10, 2020. It addressed issues of improving the socio-economic and water situation in the Aral Sea region.

Also last August, the UN Special Program developed for the Aral Sea Basin (UN SPAS) was presented at UNESCAP headquarters.

Back in the 1990s, the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS) was established to overcome the threats to the Aral Sea. Its founders were Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. The main purpose of the Fund is to financially support programs and projects of the founder countries aimed at improving the environmental situation in the region. In December 2008, the Fund was granted observer status at the UN General Assembly.

Turkmenistan seeks to preserve biodiversity and natural landscapes, so the state is active in the field of environmental protection. The country has such programs as the National Strategy on Climate Change, the National Forest Program and a number of others.
