Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan discussed the implementation of the Tuyamuyun hydroscheme transboundary project

Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan discussed steps to implement the Tuyamuyun Hydroscheme (TMHS) transboundary demo project. The fourth meeting of the Technical Working Group was also attended by experts from the European Union.

The online meeting was organized as part of the implementation of the second phase of the Nexus Dialogue Project in the Central Asian region. It aims to activate cross-sectoral financing, which is based on the water-energy-food nexus.

Delegates from the Central Asian Regional Environmental Center, TMSU, international technicians, and national coordinators also attended the meeting.

Those present at the meeting were acquainted with the results of surveys of the TMHS channel reservoir. Forecasts about increase of siltation and options of useful use of silt were also voiced.

The State Committee of Water Resources of Turkmenistan and the Ministry of Water Resources of Uzbekistan proposed the Tuyamuyun hydroscheme as a demo project in order to solve the problem of increased silting of reservoirs that is topical for the Central Asian region. Because of this process technical possibilities on water accumulation, saving and regulation, which all users of territories of Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan using TMHS resources need, are considerably limited. The project is focused on reducing the intensity of silting of the channel reservoir by means of modern and stable technical solutions, which will suit both countries.

Through this project, it will demonstrate how the Nexus approach, based on the water-energy-food nexus, will support cross-sectoral economic development planning for the long-term resilience of ecosystems.

Practical implementation of the TMHS project started in January of last year and will be completed in December of this year. The project is supported by the European Union within the framework of the Nexus Dialogue projects in the Central Asian region and the Laboratory of Innovations for the water sector of Central Asia. The project includes comprehensive assessment and analysis of areas, measurement of siltation volumes, use of international experience accumulated in the field, preparation of an investment proposal to TMHS. In particular, it is supposed to organize mutual cooperation with the global network of financial experts under the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and partnership in the field of renewable energy sources.
