Turkmenistan Initiates Regional Dialogue on Sustainable Transport

Turkmenistan initiated Regional Dialogue at a high level, relating to the issues of sustainable transport. The videoconference was attended by representatives of the structural subdivisions of United Nationsas well as deputy ministers of transport Georgia, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan. The head of the Ministry of Public Works also attended the meeting. Afghanistan. Specialists and experts from international organizations on cooperation in the transport and communication sphere were invited to participate in the event.

During the Regional Dialogue, a list of issues was discussed to enhance multilateral cooperation in the field of transport. It is also important to take into account the situation in the world economy due to the pandemic. It was noted that as a result of the pandemic, there was an acute need to adapt the economies of the Central Asian region.

Conference participants noted the need to consolidate international efforts to Improving the efficiency of international transport corridors. This will also be facilitated by new mechanisms in the field of international law.


The basis for the work in this area was the final document Forum on Sustainable Transportation. The event was held in Ashgabat in 2016 with the participation of the UN. Earlier, the President of Turkmenistan initiated the adoption by the UN General Assembly of a number of Resolutions in this area. Also, the Turkmen leader, during his report at the 75th session of the UN General Assembly, made a proposal to discuss the General Assembly Resolution, prepared by Turkmenistan and related to guaranteeing the stability of international transportation in emergencies.

The participants in the videoconference expressed their opinions and voiced a number of suggestions for the development of cooperation aimed at resolving existing issues. The Regional Dialogue resulted in a document reflecting the main messages of the conference.
