In May 2024, two new climate centers opened in Turkmenistan, located in Ashgabat and Mary. This initiative is part of the country's integrated approach to climate change adaptation and support for the most vulnerable groups.
Turkmenistan has experienced accelerated climate warming over the past half-century, which prompted the adoption of the National Climate Change Strategy in 2019. As part of this strategy, various programs are being implemented, including national plans on adaptation of public health to climate change for 2020-2025.
New climate centers are designed to create a comfortable environment for people with disabilities during the abnormal heat wave. They provide a wide range of services, including information support, psychological assistance and organization of leisure activities. The centers operate on working days at the specified addresses in Ashgabat and Mary.
The NGO Ýeňme, which specializes in the impact of climate on people with disabilities, plays a special role in this initiative. Their experience and expertise provide a targeted approach to addressing the challenges faced by vulnerable groups in a changing climate.
The opening of climate centers demonstrates Turkmenistan's commitment to solving global environmental problems at the local level. This is an important step in creating an inclusive society capable of confronting the challenges of climate change and ensuring a decent quality of life for all citizens.
