Turkmenistan has every opportunity to become a significant participant in transit traffic. This topic was discussed during a government meeting chaired by President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov. Mammetkhan Chakyev, Director General of the Transport and Communications Agency under the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan, presented a report on the activities to identify a national operator for organizing interstate transportation of goods by road and rail. This issue is especially relevant due to the desire of such countries as India, Qatar and Kazakhstan to use the capacity of the transport corridor "Lyapis Lazur". Its highways and railroads connect Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Turkey. The corridor, whose transport routes begin in Uzbekistan and run through Turkmenistan and Iran, ending in Oman, is no less interesting for expanding cooperation.
The general director of the Agency also spoke about the work aimed at increasing freight traffic along the TRACECA interstate transport corridor, which connects Europe with the Caucasus and Asia, as well as along the route connecting the Caspian and Black Seas.
According to M.Chakyyev, a number of countries are interested in participating in transit freight transportation projects, the routes of which pass through Turkmenistan, favored by the favorable tariff system. Afghan, Indian and Pakistani companies are interested in container shipments through Turkmenistan to Russia, Europe and Kazakhstan, as well as in the direction of PRC-Tajikistan-Uzbekistan-Iran-Turkey.
Negotiations with large companies are planned and underway to attract investment funds into the Turkmen transportation and logistics system, as well as to make fuller and more intensive use of the transit capacity of Turkmenbashi International Seaport.
