Olympic Torch Lighting Ceremony in Greece

Today, on March 12, the lighting ceremony of the Olympic flame was held in the city of Olympia, Greece.

The torch was lit from the sun, using parabolic mirrors, as was done at the very first Olympic Games. Next, actress Xanthi Georgiou, as the high priestess, lit the flame on the altar of the ancient Greek temple of Hera. The torch was then passed to Olympic shooting champion Anna Korakaki, who became the first woman to launch the Olympic torch relay.

The event, the first since 1984, was held behind closed doors due to the spread of the coronavirus. The ceremony was attended only by officials, including Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and Prokopus Pavlopoulos, head of the Republic of Greece.

Now the flame will travel for eight days through Greece, after which it will go to Japan. The relay will last a total of 121 days and pass through 858 cities and villages. The Olympic torch will be carried by 10 thousand people.
