The UN Friendship Games - 80" sports tournament kick-off ceremony was held in Moscow

The Moscow State Institute of International Relations of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted the opening ceremony of the UN Friendship Games-80 sports tournament and a friendly chess tournament. The event took place on August 4 and was organized with the participation of the Embassy of Turkmenistan in the Russian Federation, the Russian UN Association, the UN Information Centre and the UN-80 Public Committee. The tournament is timed to coincide with the "International Year of Peace and Trust", which was declared on the initiative of Turkmenistan with the co-sponsorship of more than 80 countries, including Russia. The opening ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, including Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov, UN Information Center Director Vladimir Kuznetsov and Turkmen Ambassador Eziz Aidogdiyev.

The Ambassador of Turkmenistan emphasized the importance of sports diplomacy and noted important anniversary dates: 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan's permanent Neutrality, 80th anniversary of Victory and 80th anniversary of the establishment of the UN. Eziz Aydogdiyev also announced plans to hold an international conference in December in Ashgabat in honor of the 30th anniversary of the Neutrality of Turkmenistan with the participation of representatives of dozens of states.

More than 30 people took part in the chess tournament, including diplomats, students and pupils of sports schools. All participants received commemorative diplomas and the winner of the tournament was awarded the Friendship Games Cup.

The sports competitions are scheduled to continue in September 2025, when soccer, tennis and chess tournaments will be held as part of the UN-80 Friendship Games.
