In Turkmenistan, the number of bank cards increased by 8% in the first half of 2020. According to by Central Bank of Turkmenistan, as of January 1, 2020 there were more than 3.9 million active bank cards in the country. Half a year later, as of July 1, this figure increased to 4.3 million. The main request for the last six months was recorded in February. The number of active cards increased by 80,935 that month.
State Commercial Bank "Daýhanbank" tops the list of bank cards issuers with about 1.6 million cards. State Commercial Bank "Türkmenistan" is in second place in the list with 809,139 active cards.
The largest number of bank cards was registered in Ashgabat, with more than 1.6 million customers. 38% of these cards belong to the State Bank for Foreign Economic Affairs of Turkmenistan. The capital is followed by Mary province, with 745,823 cards.
"Daýhanbank" is the bank with the largest number of plastic card users in the velayats of Akhal, Mary, Lebap and Dashoguz. This is due to the fact that in these regions the number of farmers producing on the basis of state obligations is higher than in Ashgabat and Balkan velayat.
The main innovation in the list of services provided to cardholders in Turkmenistan in the first half of this year was the launch of a refund service (cashback) in the range of 0.5-3% of the amount spent. Cashback is credited to the cardholder on a monthly basis, depending on the amount spent by cashless payment. Joint-stock commercial bank Rysgal, state commercial banks Halkbank and Türkmenistan launched the service in January. Whereas "Daýhanbank" announced the activation of the service in early July.
Over the past four and a half years, the number of bank cards in Turkmenistan has quadrupled. As of January 2016, there were more than 1 million bank cards in circulation.
Note that despite the fact that the number of bank cards has increased, the number of ATMs in the country remains the same as at the beginning of the year (2,197).
In addition, since the beginning of the year decreased the number of POS-terminals. At the beginning of January there were 37,279 POS-terminals registered across the country. By July 1, that number had dropped to 36,997.
