Turkmenistan's universities will study water resources management

Turkmenistan's universities will study water resources management. The discussion of the curriculum took place during the online working meeting within the joint project of UNDP, the Ministry of Agriculture and Nature Protection of Turkmenistan and the Special Climate Fund of GEF (Global Environment Facility) "Maintaining climate-resilient economic vitality of agricultural communities in the arid territories of Turkmenistan", implemented since 2016. It concerns mainly agricultural communities of Dashoguz and Lebap velayats.

Participants in the online discussion included delegates from the Ministry of Agriculture and Nature Conservation, Ministry of Education, State Committee of Water Management, Nature Conservation Society, as well as such universities as Makhtumkuli TSU, Turkmen State Energy Institute, Turkmen Agricultural Institute named after S.A. Niyazov, IIT&TK, Oguzkhan UIT, Turkmen Agricultural Institute in Dashoguz.

Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) is designed to ensure the coordinated development and management of land and water resources as well as other types of resources in order to achieve well-being in the economic and social spheres. The careful attitude to the natural environment and existing natural ecosystems is also taken into account. According to the UNDP, the study of IWRM in the relevant Turkmen universities will increase the awareness of Turkmenistan citizens in this area and promote the further use of IWRM principles. Qualified personnel working in this area will also contribute to this.
