Turkmenistan and UNEP discuss the establishment of a climate center

Ashgabat, August 2 - Arzuw.news. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov held an online meeting with UN Deputy Secretary General, Executive Director of the UN Environment Program Inger Andersen. Arzuw.news reports with reference to the press service of the Ministry of Communications of Turkmenistan.

The central topic of the negotiations was the establishment of the Regional Center for Climate Change Technologies for Central Asian countries with headquarters in Ashgabat. The parties reaffirmed the importance of joining efforts in addressing global environmental problems.

The participants of the meeting exchanged views on the practical implementation of the Global Commitment on Methane, to which Turkmenistan joined during the 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. The participants noted the start of work on a joint project with the International Methane Emissions Observatory to develop a mechanism for regular provision of updated data on emissions detected by the MARS system.

Special attention was paid to the possibilities of expanding cooperation between Turkmenistan and UNEP on the development of the "Caspian Environment Initiative". This proposal was put forward by the President of Turkmenistan at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.

Inger Andersen thanked the Turkmen side for the invitation to participate in the Regional Conference on Food Security in the Context of Climate Change, which is scheduled for November in Turkmenistan.
