Head of the UNRCCA assesses activities against COVID-19 in Turkmenistan

UN Secretary General's Special Representative for Central Asia and Head of the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia N. Herman was interviewed online by radio Voice of the CISIn her speech, she thanked the head of Turkmenistan for his support of the mission's activities and assistance in the implementation of regional projects.

She highlighted the organization's key activities: cooperation on regional initiatives in Central Asia, countering extremism and terrorism, coordinating transboundary water use, and increasing the influence of young people and women in diplomatic processes.

To discuss strategic issues of the Regional Center, annual meetings of representatives of CA countries are held. Given the increasing role of Afghanistan in the region, the meetings have recently been held in the "5+1" format. In 2020, such a meeting will be held at the end of the year.

Ms. Herman highlighted the effective expert work conducted by UNRCCA and the UN Counterterrorism Office in developing the Action Plan of the Strategy against Extremism and Terrorism in Turkmenistan for 2020-2024.

The head of RCCA described the measures against COVID-19 taken by Central Asian countries at all levels as appropriate. She noted the strengthening of interaction between the countries, including on humanitarian cargo and repatriation of citizens, which is extremely important in the current situation. Ms. Herman also appreciated the timeliness of the measures that have been taken at the Turkmen border and, in her opinion, they play an important role in combating COVID-19.
