Tomatoes have become Turkmenistan's agricultural export champion in 2019

Tomatoes were the top export recipient for 2019 among agricultural products.

According to the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan, tomato exports reached 21,000 tons last year.

In 2017, about 5 thousand tons of tomatoes were exported from Turkmenistan, in 2018 this volume exceeded 8 thousand tons. In 2019, revenues from doubled (compared to 2018) tomato exports amounted to more than $23 million . This covered 60% of agricultural products exported by Turkmen entrepreneurs in 2019.

Export potential in tomato production is gradually increasing due to an increase in the number of greenhouses.

At present, there is a 320-hectare greenhouse system in operation in Turkmenistan. Construction and organization of new greenhouses is underway on about 1,000 hectares.

The development of the greenhouse industry creates new areas of activity for entrepreneurs and provides the local population with new jobs. Each 10-hectare greenhouse complex employs an average of 100-120 people.

On February 7, at an enlarged meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan, it was noted that SPP enterprises produced 28% more agricultural and food products during the year than in 2018. It was also emphasized at the meeting that land funds are being created for the cultivation of various agricultural products.

At the first meeting of the Khalk Maslakhaty in 2018, decisions were made in the field of agriculture. In order to identify these measures, on October 12, 2018, the President of Turkmenistan signed a decree to approve the volume of the special agricultural land fund. As a result, a special agricultural land fund of 117 thousand 774.9 hectares was created.

The list of the most exported agricultural products by Turkmen entrepreneurs in 2019 included cereals, melons and grapes after tomatoes.
