Turkmenistan's Ambassador to Russia, Batyr Niyazliyev, and the Governor of Astrakhan Region of the Russian Federation, Igor Babushkin, met in Moscow. The Russian governor thanked the President of Turkmenistan and the Turkmen nation for the humanitarian assistance provided to the region during the worsening COVID-19 pandemic.
The participants in the talks discussed the intensification of trade and economic cooperation between the region of Russia and Turkmenistan. Since the beginning of 2020, the turnover amounted to $7 million. Ivan Babushkin expressed the desire to diversify cooperation: the Astrakhan region is ready to supply agricultural and fish products, but needs textiles, cotton and polypropylene from Turkmenistan.
Transport and transit issues were also discussed, including the development of a special port-economic hub in Astrakhan. The potential of building ships for Turkmenistan at Astrakhan shipyards is under consideration. The parties also discussed organization of cargo and cruise traffic on the Volga River from Moscow to the Caspian Sea ports via Astrakhan.
