Turkmenistan honors the memory of the victims of the 1948 Ashgabat earthquake

On the night of October 6, 1948, the city of Ashgabat was almost completely destroyed by a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of up to 9 points. The epicenter of the catastrophe was in close proximity to the capital, which resulted in colossal human casualties and destruction of infrastructure. About it reports MIC.

Despite the tragedy, in the first hours after the tremors, a large-scale effort to rescue survivors and clear the rubble began. The military, medics and volunteers from all regions of the country provided assistance to the victims. The spirit of mutual assistance and the resilience of Ashgabat residents who stayed behind to rebuild their city became a symbol of revival. A vivid example of this was the ancient mosque restored from the ruins, in the walls of which a local history museum was later opened.

The memory of the tragic events and the heroic deeds of the people is immortalized in the memorial complex "Halk hakydasy" opened in Ashgabat in 2014. The modern white marble look of the capital is a clear evidence of the indomitable will of the Turkmen people.

Every year on October 6, Turkmenistan celebrates the Day of Remembrance. On this day, the people honor the memory of those who died in the earthquake and other heroes of history, demonstrating the continuity of generations and faith in the future of the country.
