UNDP, together with the Institute of Seismology and Atmospheric Physics of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, organized a two-week training course, during which Turkmen specialists were trained to perform seismic assessments of buildings. The event was held online as part of a joint project to strengthen the country's national capacity in seismic risk assessment, prevention and timely response to possible earthquakes.
The training is divided into two stages. This allowed it to be more effective at the expense of a longer duration. The first group, consisting of four specialists, receives knowledge from German and Kyrgyz teachers. The students will then become teachers themselves and pass their knowledge on to the second group, which will consist of six to eight people. The program combines a theoretical and practical course. During the training, the trainees of the courses themselves will examine 3-4 buildings with a different number of floors, with the subsequent processing of the obtained data. They conduct engineering surveys using modern seismic equipment produced by the German company "DiGOS Potsdam GmbH".
At the moment the first group is being trained. It consists of employees of the Turkmen Institute of Seismology and the national consultant of the abovementioned project. Training is conducted by highly professional specialists in the field of seismic vulnerability and seismic risk assessment - S.A.Tyagunov (Germany) and S.J.Orunbaev (Kyrgyzstan).
