Park rangers from the Sevadkuh district of Iran's Mazenderan province shared the surprising find with the on the southern shore of the Caspian Sea. They managed to see a family of Persian leopards.
Persian leopard is on the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) because the species is threatened with extinction. The population is steadily declining and is currently estimated at 871-1290 adult animals.
According to Iran's Ministry of Environment, about 156 leopards were killed between 2005 and 2014. Scientists estimate that there are currently no more than 500 Persian leopards in Iran.
