Turkmenistan supports UNHCR's refugee protection policy

Representatives of the State Migration Service of Turkmenistan and representative of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Friedrich Schoeder met. The meeting was reported by the Internet publication "Turkmenistan: Golden Age".

During the meeting the parties discussed issues on eradication of statelessness. The UNHCR representative expressed interest in expanding cooperation between Turkmenistan and the UN and carrying out activities within the framework of international obligations. Adhering to the UN international conventions Turkmenistan has already accepted thousands of refugees among its citizens.

Turkmenistan is the only country from Central Asia to have adopted all four major UN conventions related to UNHCR's activities and the first country in the region to be elected as a permanent member of UNHCR's Executive Committee.
