Today a meeting of the WTO General Council was held in Geneva, on the agenda of which was our country's request for observer status.
Speaking at the ceremony on behalf of the Turkmen government, the Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the UN Office in Geneva spoke about the birth of cooperation with the WTO and the authorities' progressive policy on foreign trade, enshrined in "Turkmenistan's Foreign Trade Development Program for 2020-2025".
Observer status opens up great prospects for Turkmenistan: new opportunities for economic growth in the country, strengthening foreign trade positions and development of international trade, attracting foreign investment, etc.
Turkmenistan's initiative to join the WTO was supported by member countries of the Organization, in particular: Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Panama, India, Paraguay, Mongolia, Pakistan, Uruguay.
After considering the information received, the WTO General Council unanimously decided to grant Turkmenistan observer status. Our country became the 25th state to receive this status. In total, there are 164 members of the Organization.
