Turkmenistan's chess team won gold, silver and bronze medals at the West Asian Junior Under-20 Championship held in Colombo (Sri Lanka). The tournament was attended by 110 athletes from nine countries.
Leyla Shohradova, a graduate of secondary school No. 31 in Danev district of Lebap province, won the gold medal in the Rapid tournament. The chess player with a rating of 1960 scored 6.5 points from seven rounds, ahead of Indian athlete Sri Redi Kirti by a shelf and Sri Lankan representative K M Daamadi Sanudula by a point.
The silver medal in classical control went to Lala Shokhradova, Leyla's older sister and a student at the International University of Oil and Gas. She scored seven points from nine games and earned the first point towards the title of FIDE International Master among women. Galina Mikheeva of Russia won the women's classical tournament with 8.5 points.
Amanmukhammet Khommadov, a first-year student of the Turkmen State Institute of Physical Culture and Sports, won the bronze medal in the classical tournament among juniors. He scored seven points out of nine, fulfilled the standard of FIDE master and received one point to the title of international master. The gold in the men's category was won by Russian Konstantin Popov (7.5 points), while the silver went to Kazakhstan's Asman Bayantas, who beat the Turkmen chess player on additional indicators.
The competitions were held in three types of chess: classical, Rapid and Blitz. In the unofficial team standings, the national team of Turkmenistan took second place, losing only to the Russian team, which played under the FIDE flag.
