Turkmenistan continues to improve cycling and bicycle traffic. A draft of the five-year Cycling Development Program has already been prepared, with activities planned through 2025. Deputy Prime Minister Mametmurat Geldinyazov, who is in charge of education, sports, science and healthcare, reported this to the Leader of the Turkmen nation, Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov.
The main task of the Program is to create conditions for cyclists in Turkmenistan that will promote the growth of cycling skills, improve the position of Turkmen cyclists in the world rankings, and increase the general interest in cycling.
Mass bicycle rallies have become a good tradition in Turkmenistan. They are organized in connection with important dates in the history of the state. Bicycle rallies in support of healthy lifestyles and sports carried out by Turkmen athletes have already appeared in the Guinness Book of Records. Turkmenistan also initiated the proclamation of the World Bike Day, which was established by the UN on June 3.
In October 2021, the Turkmen capital is scheduled to host of the world cycling championships. During the government meeting, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov gave instructions on the organizational activities aimed at preparing for this global championship. The head of state stressed that the sports diplomacy actively implemented by Turkmenistan is part of the overall foreign policy strategy. It has resulted in Turkmenistan becoming the center where various large-scale competitions of international importance are held in recent years.
The leader of the Turkmen nation instructed to finalize the draft of the Cycling Development Program, giving a number of recommendations. The head of the country stressed the need to upgrade the infrastructure, expand it, which will eventually contribute to the development of mass cycling. This includes the creation of bicycle parking lots, special lanes, rental stations, workshops and specialized stores.
