September 15 is the International Day of Democracy, proclaimed by the UN General Assembly. According to a United Nations resolution, states, organizations, and individuals are invited to observe the day to raise public awareness.
At the end of June, Turkey was elected President of the UN General Assembly, and one of the UN General Assembly Vice-Presidents - Turkmenistan. Volkan Bozkir, who represents Turkey at the UN Headquarters (New York, USA), takes office on September 16, 2020. The 75th anniversary session of the General Policy Debate will begin on September 22, and high-level meetings will begin the day before. In view of the global pandemic COVID-19, the format of the UN session has changed - most world leaders will attend in virtual mode.
Despite a slightly modified format, the multilateral meetings will be as active as possible. The General Assembly will discuss progress and prospects for achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals five years ago; the protection of biodiversity; and progress on the Declaration on Women's Rights.
