A workshop on the cryosphere of Central Asia was held in Ashgabat on October 8-9 as part of a regional thematic seminar. This is reported by the Internet edition "Turkmenistan: The Golden Age."
The event was attended by representatives of environmental and hydrometeorological agencies of Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. The seminar was aimed at studying snow, glacial and permafrost formations in conditions of climate aridization, their ability to maintain the flow rate of transboundary rivers Amu Darya and Syr Darya. The Forum became an effective platform for scientific exchange of specialists from Central Asian countries.
Special attention was paid to glaciers in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, on which the Amu Darya fullness depends. The Karakum River, which provides 90% Turkmenistan's fresh water needs, originates from the Amu Darya.
