A new 177-meter railway bridge of Serhetabat-Turgundi railroad was opened today on the Turkmen-Afghan border in Mary province. Ceremonial events were held on this occasion today. This is reported by the Internet edition "Westiabad."

The ceremony was attended by President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov (via digital system), Chairman of the Khalk Maslakhaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and Acting Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Afghanistan Molla Mohammed Hasan Akhund.

The Serkhetabat-Turgundi railroad was put into operation in February 2018. The construction works were carried out by Turkmen specialists. The implementation of the project began in late 2017 following the 7th Regional Economic Cooperation Conference on Afghanistan. Improvement of the railroad connection to the Afghan city of Turgundi increased the capacity of the station, thus contributing to the economic development of Afghanistan.

The Serhetabat-Turgundi railroad is part of an initiative to connect Afghanistan to Turkmenistan's transportation system and international communications.
