Turkmenistan's initiative on a death penalty-free zone to be put forward at UNGA session

During the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, which will start on September 12, Turkmenistan will propose to develop a "Treaty on a Death Penalty Free Zone in Central Asia and Mongolia". This is reported by the Internet publication "Turkmenistan: Golden Age".

Turkmenistan is the first country in Central Asia to abolish the death penalty. Today, the countries of the Central Asian region and Mongolia have a high potential to become the first region free of the death penalty.

Thus, Turkmenistan will propose at the UNGA session to consider the possibility of developing and adopting an international "Treaty on a Death Penalty Free Zone in Central Asia and Mongolia". In the future, the Treaty may become the basis for the elaboration and adoption of the Convention on the Abolition of the Death Penalty in order to promote the abolition of the death penalty worldwide.
