Turkmenistan held a large-scale UN conference in August

Turkmenistan in August implemented an extensive program of international events within the framework of President Serdar Berdimuhamedov's "open door" policy, including a major UN conference and a series of bilateral summits. The central event of the month was the Third UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries, which was held on August 5-8 in the Avaza National Tourist Zone. The event was attended by heads of state from more than 100 countries, representatives of about 50 international organizations and over 160 journalists from 40 countries.

On the eve of the conference, August 3, the National Leader of the Turkmen people Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov met with UN Secretary General António Guterres in Avaza. The next day in Turkmenbashi, Hero-Arkadag held talks with Presidents of Kazakhstan Kasym-Jomart Tokayev, Tajikistan Emomali Rakhmon and Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

The conference included specialized forums: Parliamentary, Civil Society, Youth and Private Sector. August 6 was officially proclaimed "International Day for the Dissemination of Information on the Special Needs of Landlocked Developing Countries" according to the UN General Assembly resolution.

Diplomatic activity continued with a series of bilateral meetings. On August 20, Turkmenistan's Foreign Minister held talks with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington. On August 22, a trilateral meeting of the leaders of Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan was held in Avaza with the signing of a joint statement.

Other significant events included political consultations with Pakistan on August 25, which included discussion of the TAPI gas pipeline, and a meeting of Turkmen and Russian foreign ministers in Moscow on August 28. Also, a delegation of Turkmen women led by Oguljahan Atabaeva visited China for high-level meetings.
