Turkmenistan strengthens environmental cooperation with the UN

Ashgabat, July 9 - Arzuw.news. Turkmenistan is actively developing international cooperation on environmental issues under the leadership of President Serdar Berdimuhamedov and with the support of Hero-Arkadag Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. This is reported by the publication Turkmenistan: Golden Age.

As part of the fight against climate change, the country joined the Global Methane Commitment at the COP-28 conference last December. Earlier, in 2023, an Intersectoral Commission for the Reduction of Methane Emissions was established.

In November 2024, the government approved the Roadmap for 2025-2026 to strengthen international cooperation to realize the goals of the Methane Commitment. The document provides for specific steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

At the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov put forward an initiative to develop a holistic UN environmental strategy for Central Asia. Turkmenistan also proposed to establish a UN Regional Climate Technology Center for the region.

Arkadag hero Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov participated in the One Water Summit in Riyadh in December 2024 within the framework of the 16th Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. At the event, it was proposed to establish a Regional Center to Combat Desertification for Central Asia and neighboring states.

Special attention is paid to the preservation of the Caspian Sea ecosystem - the Concept of the Caspian Environmental Initiative has been developed. Turkmenistan also continues to work on solving the Aral Sea problem by chairing the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea in 2017-2019 and adopting the National Program on the Aral Sea for 2021-2025.

Together with the UN, a Roadmap of Turkmenistan's youth initiatives in the field of climate change for 2025 has been prepared. All environmental initiatives are implemented within the framework of the International Year of Peace and Confidence, dedicated to the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan's permanent neutrality.
