Turkmenistan strengthens cooperation with the UN in the anniversary year of its neutrality

In a significant year for Turkmenistan and the entire world community, which marks the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations and the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan's neutrality, cooperation between the republic and the organization is reaching a new level. Today, January 14, Chairman of the Khalk Maslakhaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and UN Secretary-General António Guterres had a telephone conversation during which they discussed key areas of cooperation. About it reported State news agency of Turkmenistan.

During the conversation, the National Leader of the Turkmen people presented the Concept of Activities within the framework of the International Year of Peace and Confidence developed by Turkmenistan, which received the full support of the UN Secretary General. The document provides for a comprehensive approach to strengthening international security, including the development of the Global Security Strategy under the auspices of the UN and the active use of preventive diplomacy tools.

Special attention was paid to regional security issues. The sides discussed the situation in Central Asia, the problem of water use in the region and the situation in Afghanistan. Turkmenistan, relying on its neutral status, took the initiative to establish two peacekeeping centers on its territory and proposed to grant neutral states the status of priority partners in UN peacekeeping efforts. The Turkmen side also reaffirmed its readiness to intensify national actions to implement the UN tasks until 2030 and strengthen interaction with the specialized agencies of the organization.

Speaking about water issues in the Central Asian region, Chairman of the Khalk Maslakhaty of Turkmenistan recalled the clear position of the country presented at the "One Water" summit in Riyadh on December 3, 2024. Turkmenistan insists that the solution of water issues should be based on three key principles: strict compliance with the norms of international law, consideration of the interests of all states in the region and active participation of international organizations, primarily the UN. The conversation emphasized that ignoring these basic principles could lead to serious environmental, socio-economic and humanitarian risks for all countries in the region.

In the context of the development of the Caspian region, the Turkmen side made a proposal to hold the Meeting of Foreign Ministers of the Caspian littoral states, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in ensuring regional stability.

As part of the discussion of the humanitarian agenda, Turkmenistan presented the successful results of the National Action Plan on Elimination of Statelessness for 2019-2024. Taking into account the positive experience in this area, the Turkmen side proposed to extend its experience on interaction with stateless persons and refugees to the entire Central Asian region. Special attention was paid to humanitarian support to Afghanistan: Turkmenistan has been providing assistance to the neighboring country for many years, including the construction of social facilities at its own expense. The National Leader of the Turkmen people reaffirmed the country's intention to continue and strengthen cooperation with specialized UN agencies on humanitarian issues, emphasizing readiness for further implementation of socially significant projects in the region.

As part of the Sustainable Development Goals, Turkmenistan presented a number of global initiatives, including the development of a circular economy transition program, the creation of an atlas of sustainable transport connectivity and the formation of an Energy Security Alliance.

The culmination of international cooperation this year will be the forum in Ashgabat, scheduled for December 12, which will bring together heads of state and heads of international organizations. It is noteworthy that at all upcoming international events in Turkmenistan, the UN flag will be placed alongside the national flag, which symbolizes the high level of partnership between the country and the organization. A special Organizing State Committee has been established in Turkmenistan to coordinate all the planned events.

Following the conversation, the sides expressed confidence in further strengthening of strategic partnership and reaffirmed their readiness to expand cooperation in all areas of interaction in the interests of peace and sustainable development both regionally and globally.

It is worth noting that the telephone conversation was held at the initiative of the UN Secretary-General, which emphasizes the importance of partnership with Turkmenistan in strengthening international peace and security.
