Turkmenistan was one of the countries where the UN Population Fund launched the #Arzylyzenan (#Shecounts) campaign to promote girls' rights. As part of the project, fathers, brothers and husbands will share their pride in their girls and women on social media, thus emphasizing their high importance in society.
The UN Population Fund's Global Report shows that there are still various types of harmful practices against women in the world that are considered human rights violations. For example, child marriage is still relevant in parts of the Eastern European and Central Asian regions. Although their proportion has recently declined, they still continue to be practiced. In those same regions parents prefer sons, while daughters are considered a burden to be disposed of by marriage.
As experience shows, ratifying international agreements and adopting legislation at the local level are often not enough. Bottom-up approaches are more effective, so it was decided to launch the #Arzylyzenan (#Shecounts) campaign.
The current situation in the world with the COVID-19 pandemic could lead to a regression in the protection of women's and girls' rights. According to the analysis, if all programs and services in this area are closed for another six months, early marriage will become a real threat to 13 million girls between now and 2030. Closing educational institutions and restricting freedom of movement also deny adolescent girls the opportunity to learn about and fight for their rights.
