The Central Election Commission of Turkmenistan named the winner of the elections for the post of the head of state, which were held on March 12. It was Serdar Berdymukhamedov, the candidate of the Democratic Party, who received more than 72% of votes. As noted earlier, the elections were declared valid with a record turnout of over 97%.
The elections were held ahead of schedule because the country's leader, Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, announced his decision to step down as president at a meeting of the Khalk Maslakhaty Milli Gengesh on February 11, stressing that the state needs a young leader under the current conditions of development.
В предвыборной кампании участвовало 9 кандидатов от 3-х партий и инициативных групп. Сердар Бердымухамедов победил со значительным перевесом голосов, на втором месте с результатом 11,09% – Нуннаев Х.К., проректор ТГИФС по научной части. На третьем месте с результатом 7,22% – выдвиженец Аграрной партии А. Бекмырадов.
