The national holiday "A Drop of Water is a Grain of Gold" is traditionally celebrated in Turkmenistan on April 2. This day has been included in the calendar of holidays since 1995 and is celebrated on the first Sunday of April. Ainabat Ataeva, head of the public organization "Ecodurmush", told centralasia.news about the importance of careful attitude to water resources.
The name of the holiday is directly related to the geographical location of Turkmenistan, 80% of which is occupied by the Karakum desert. In this regard, the expert emphasized the symbolism of the name of the holiday, as the Turkmen people highly value water, equating a drop of water to a grain of gold.
Care, conservation and rehabilitation of water resources are priority directions of Turkmenistan's policy. In order to provide the people with drinking water, the country is currently implementing many programs on installation of water treatment facilities, construction of drinking water plants, construction of new and increase of volumes of existing water reservoirs.
