Contrary to expectationsThe DPRK national team's refusal to participate in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers did not bring additional points to Turkmenistan. The International Football Federation has decided to cancel the results of all matches of the World Cup 2022 and the Asian Cup 2023, the participant of which was the national team of North Korea. This information is published on the FIFA website.
The North Korean national soccer team has refused to participate further in qualifying matches for the 2022 World Cup to be held in Qatar and the Asia Cup 2023 to be held in the PRC.
Previously, the DPRK also refused to participate in the Tokyo Olympics due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The North Korean national team played 5 matches out of the 8 required for the 2022 World Cup qualifying round. According to their results, the team had 8 points. FIFA could have handed the national team a technical defeat in the matches it had to play against Turkmenistan, South Korea and Sri Lanka. However, the final decision turned out to be different.
The annulment of the results of the matches in which the North Korean team was a participant deprived the Turkmen team of three points. Now, instead of the top ranking in Group H, Turkmenistan has occupied the third position. They now have six points through four matches. The group is led by the South Korean and Lebanese teams, each with 7 points. At the "tail end" of the ranking is the Sri Lankan team with zero points.
The city of Koyang will host the remaining qualifying matches May 31-June 15 this year. The Turkmen soccer team has two more matches left. One will be with South Korean players. It will be held June 5 at 4pm Ashgabat time. The Turkmenistanis will face Lebanon on June 9 at 11:00 am.
