The international conference "Caspian Sea - Sea of Peace and Friendship" started its work today in the National Tourist Zone "Avaza" in Turkmenistan. The event was timed to coincide with the Caspian Sea Day annually celebrated in Turkmenistan and other Caspian countries.
The conference notes Turkmenistan's active role in strengthening peace, mutual understanding and cooperation among the Caspian littoral states over the years. Back in 2002, Turkmenistan organized the landmark First Caspian Summit, where leaders of the five Caspian littoral states met for the first time to lay the foundation for multilateral cooperation on regional issues.
Since then, Turkmenistan has initiated a number of initiatives aimed at developing cooperation between Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan on issues related to the resource-rich Caspian Sea. These include regular consultations of authorized representatives of the five states to jointly develop legal documents on the status of the Caspian Sea.
In 2019, Turkmenistan hosted the First Caspian Economic Forum to expand economic ties and explore new partnership opportunities in priority areas such as energy, transportation, industry and trade.
Turkmenistan's status of permanent neutrality is also consistent with its vision of the Caspian Sea as a sea of peace, harmony and cooperation between neighboring countries.
Jointly protecting the fragile Caspian nature and maintaining the environmental well-being of the region remain relevant common goals. The conference participants also emphasized the need to build on historical, cultural and humanitarian commonalities by intensifying humanitarian contacts.
The annual celebration of Caspian Sea Day emphasizes the strategic importance of the Caspian Sea for the littoral states. Today's conference at the Avaza NTZ provided a platform for experts to explore ways to further strengthen and expand cooperation between the Caspian littoral states.
