Turkmenistan patents technology for iodine production from algae

The technology of bio-additives production from Caspian seaweed patented in Turkmenistan

The State Intellectual Property Service of the Ministry of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan has registered the copyright for innovative technology of iodine and polysaccharides production from brown and blue-green algae of the Caspian Sea. Arzuw.news reports with reference to the publication Turkmenistan: Golden Age.

The technology was developed by specialists of the Laboratory of Biotechnology of the International Science and Technology Park of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan: A. Rakhmanova, D. Gadamov and A. Ashyrova. The new development opens wide opportunities for the production of valuable bioactive additives and pharmaceuticals from algae Phaeophyceae and blue-green algae Cyanobacteria.

The resulting organic iodine is highly bioavailable and easily absorbed by the human body, effectively replenishing the iodine deficiency necessary for the production of thyroid hormones. In addition, iodine and polysaccharides from algae demonstrate antitumor properties, triggering the process of apoptosis of cancer cells without adversely affecting healthy tissues.

Studies have shown that the obtained substances have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antiviral effects against influenza, herpes and cytomegalovirus viruses.

The development is implemented within the framework of the Strategy for the Development of Science for 2024-2052 and the "Program for the Comprehensive Development of Biotechnology in the Country for 2024-2028". According to Altyn Rakhmanova, Head of the Biotechnology Laboratory, one of the key directions of the Program is the creation of technologies for obtaining new medicines from the flora of Turkmenistan.
