Guterres to come to Turkmenistan for UN summit

Avaza, August 2 - Arzuw.news. The Third UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDC3) will be held in the Turkmen resort town of Avaza from August 5-8. This large-scale event is held once a decade and is designed to solve the problems of 32 developing countries of the world deprived of direct access to sea routes. UN Secretary-General António Guterres will take part in the conference, which emphasizes the high importance of the event for the international community. The central document will be the Avaza Action Program for 2024-2034, which was adopted by the UN General Assembly last December.

Statistics show the scale of the problem: trade costs for landlocked countries are 74% higher than the world average, while accounting for only 1.2% of world trade. Among the 32 such countries, 16 are categorized as least developed countries.

The Action Program covers five priority areas: structural transformation of the economy, infrastructure development, trade facilitation, regional integration and building resilience.

UN High Representative Rabab Fatima said the conference aims to help millions of people without internet access, as well as farmers and entrepreneurs in those countries.

Ambassador Diego Pacheco of Bolivia, Chair of the Group of Landlocked Countries, emphasized the inextricable link between the destiny of humankind and the development of those States.

The event program includes plenary sessions, five high-level roundtables and a special Private Sector Forum aimed at attracting investment in the development of landlocked countries.
