On October 6, Turkmenistan pays tribute to the victims of the devastating earthquake of 1948, as well as to the soldiers who fell on the battlefields. Early this morning, thousands of residents and guests of Ashgabat laid flowers at the monuments "Sons of the Nation", "Spiritual Bow" and "Eternal Glory" located in the Memorial Complex of the Turkmen capital. This is reported on the pages of the Internet publication "Türkmenistan Habarlar Portaly".
Memorial prayers were held in all velayats of the country on the Day of Mourning and state flags were lowered. The Chairman of the Majlis, deputy prime ministers of the country, heads of various departments and ministries, representatives of foreign diplomatic missions, honorary elders, representatives of mass media, students and teachers of universities participated in the ceremony of laying wreaths at the Memorial Complex.
The earthquake, which occurred in Ashgabat on the night of October 5-6, 1948, was recognized by UNESCO as one of the most destructive natural disasters of the 20th century. The number of victims of the earthquake according to different sources amounted to 100-170 thousand people.
