Turanian Deserts of Turkmenistan inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List

"Turanian deserts of temperate belt", which are located on the territory of Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan entered the UNESCO World Heritage List in accordance with the recommendation of the International Union for Conservation of Nature. This is reported in the press release of the IUCN Eastern Europe and Central Asia Regional Office.

The inclusion of this natural site in the UNESCO List was made possible thanks to the active work of the national authorities, as well as support of the nomination by international experts. The Turanian deserts became the first temperate deserts to be included in the UNESCO List of Natural Protected Areas. The World Heritage Site status will allow for more effective protection of these unique territories and will contribute to the conservation of species of animals and birds characteristic of the region.

In addition to the "Turanian Temperate Deserts", the World Heritage List also includes the "Tugai Forests of the Tigrovaya Balka Reserve" located in Tajikistan.
